| South Central United States Mississippi Mississippi has become a popular gambling destination. The facilities are located in seven of the state's counties; most are located in the Tunica region, near Memphis, or on the state's Gulf Coast, an easy drive from New Orleans. Casinos are also found along the Mississippi River in the picturesque towns of Greenville, Vicksburg, and Natchez. All are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, although those on the Gulf Coast may close in anticipation of a hurricane or tropical storm, and those on the Mississippi River may close when the river runs especially high. Mississippi law requires that patrons be at least 21 years of age, though children may pass through the gaming areas on the way to a restaurant if they are accompanied by an adult. Some facilities offer entertainment and video games for children. Chips from one Mississippi casino may be used in any other Mississippi casino without being exchanged. However, a dealer may substitute chips from his or her own with those from the outside casino when play begins. Those who are concerned may ask first; it may be easier to cash out your chips at the casino where they were obtained. Louisiana Louisiana law permits a total of 15 boat-based casinos and a land-based casino in New Orleans. Additionally, the state has three (land-based) Indian casinos. About half of the state's parishes allow video poker at truck stops or in bars. Louisiana riverboat casinos do not leave the dock; all are open 24 hours. A patron must be 21 years old to gamble. Louisiana casinos are required to withhold six percent of a gambler's winnings for the Louisiana Department of Revenue if the gambler wins a jackpot or a tournament worth $1,200 or more. The gambler may receive a partial refund by filing a state income tax return. The non-Indian casinos are located near the state's major cities: New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, and Shreveport/Bossier City. Harrah’s New Orleans Casino, the state's non-Indian land-based casino, is located on the New Orleans riverfront. The 100,000 square-feet facility features five themed gaming areas, live jazz music, and a variety of dining options. contact@gamblinginamerica.com |
